For the first time Malaysia AFF Cup champion grabbed the trophy. Beating the defending champion, Vietnam, and overthrew Indonesia, Rajagobal called his team deserve to be champions.
Malaysia AFF Cup began with embarrassing results. Facing Indonesia in Bung Karno Main Stadium, Rajagopal's squad claimed a landslide defeat with the score 1-5.
But after that Malaysia appear convincing enough to beat Thailand in the race for tickets to the semifinals. In the last four Malaysia and even Vietnam could frustrate defending champions 2-0 on aggregate.
Their outstanding performance came in the first leg final round by rolling Indonesia 3-0. The defeat 1-2 in GBK was not enough to avoid Malaysia to be a champion of ASEAN.
"I'm happy with my players and I praise my players who come here with confidence. And practically, I think we deserve to be champions," said Rajagobal in a press conference after the final match.
"I have faith in my players. After winning opponent of Vietnam, I see we have the strength to opponents of Indonesia, even though we know they have a good team," he continued.
Related to the second leg at GBK, Rajagopal said that he was already predicting the strategy to be applied to Indonesia and therefore has been prepared in anticipation.
"I know the Indonesian national team will begin aggressively to score, especially in the early rounds. Then I tell my players to play tight. Because if we love the breath then we can give them a chance," complete Rajagobal.
